In Memoriam: Prof Marius de Waal

Professor Marius de Waal, professor of Private Law at the University of Stellenbosch, passed away last Thursday after suffering an aneurism in the brain the previous week.

Prof de Waal was a co-author of Honoré’s South African Law of Trusts with judge Edwin Cameron and adv Peter Solomon SC, and of Law of Succession with prof Linda Schoeman-Malan. He was an internationally renowned expert of the law of trusts and succession law. He received a fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany and was a visiting professor at Paris Descartes University in France and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.

Prof de Waal was a speaker at the 2014 FISA Conference and was invited more than once after that, but his busy schedule did not allow a repeat performance. He was an extremely modest and courteous man and will be sorely missed by all who crossed his path – students, academics, practitioners and many others.

FISA extend our sincerest condolences to his family.

A private memorial service will be held in the NG Moederkerk in Stellenbosch on Saturday 1 May 2021 at 10:00. Due to Covid regulations, only family and close friends may attend. The service will, however, be available on YouTube.
