Ethical behaviour is a non-negotiable for fiduciary practitioners. One of the most troublesome threats to being perceived to act ethically is a conflict of interest. At the same time, potential conflict of interest situations in estate and trust administration can also be a huge opportunity for practitioners to display their independence and contribution to proper action in those situations. Attendees will gain insight into the nature of conflicts of interest, as well as proper behaviour in these situations through practical examples, legislation, and case law.

Louis is Director: Trust Services of Finlac Risk and Legal Management, a financial planning practice in Cape Town, and the previous CEO of FISA.

He holds BA, LL B, and LL M degrees from RAU (now UJ), the Advanced Certificate in Leadership from UCT and the Advanced Post-Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning (cum laude) from UFS. He is a non-practising advocate of the High Court of South Africa and holds CFP® professional, FPSA® and TEP designations.

Previous positions include state advocate, legal adviser, and senior management positions in Old Mutual Trust and BoE Trust.

Louis has lectured in the fields of financial planning and fiduciary at UFS, US, USB, Milpark Education, and UWC.

He served on the ILPA / FPI examination committee (1997 to 2002), initiated the FPSA® examination introduced by FISA in 2011, and was moderator for the CFP® professional examinations of the FPI (2018 to 2020).

Louis is a co-author of the Fiduciary Services Handbook, a LexisNexis publication.
