Moonstone: Legal precedent set as Odendaal’s assets forfeited in Steinhoff fraud battle

Moonstone writes on the recent forfeiture of assets belonging to Berdine Odendaal, the alleged lover of former Steinhoff chief executive Markus Jooste, which has set a significant legal precedent in the fight against corporate fraud in South Africa.

The South African Reserve Bank gave notice of a decision to forfeit to the state cash held in Odendaal’s five accounts with Absa, Capitec, and Standard Bank, amounting to R42 million, and her R18m property in Paarl’s Val de Vie estate.

The Moonstone article recaps a previous article on Jooste’s estate, quoting FISA CEO Louis van Vuren on whether trust and other assets could potentially form part of his estate.
