BizNews: Most wills fail because of one bad choice

Writing for BizNews, Malissa Conlin of Brenthurst Wealth says choosing the right executor is the most overlooked decision in estate planning and can determine whether a will succeeds or fails.

An executor is legally responsible for collecting assets, settling debts, dealing with SARS and the Master’s Office, and distributing inheritances. Appointing someone without the time, expertise or objectivity can lead to costly delays, family conflict and even litigation.

Malissa points out that a professional executor, or a trusted family member working alongside one, is often the best solution. A will is only as effective as the person entrusted to carry out its instructions.
