Wayne de Jager of Firearmdesk highlights the often-overlooked issue of firearms in deceased estates, noting for example that more than 36,000 Western Cape residents died with licensed firearms.
A September 2026 High Court ruling confirms that expired firearm licences do not extinguish ownership and that firearms remain estate assets. Wayne urges executors to identify firearms early, check the Central Firearms Registry and ensure proper administration. He stresses that it is far easier to deal with in the first week than at the final account”.
Executors must also comply with strict reporting and safekeeping requirements to avoid delays in finalising estates.
