The Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (POPIA) became effective of 1 July 2020. The act provides for the protection of personal information processed by public and private bodies and the issuing of codes of conduct for such bodies, amongst others. The safeguarding of records necessary for a legitimate business purpose is also regulated. The act will apply to all FISA members who deal with or handle personal information of clients.
