A valid will is essential for ensuring your wishes are followed after your death. Anyone over 16 who is mentally competent can make a will, but it must be in writing, signed on every page and witnessed by two people over 14 who are not beneficiaries or executors.
A will should specify bequests, beneficiaries, the executor, guardians for minor children and, where appropriate, a testamentary trust. While simple wills can be drafted independently, professional fiduciary advice is recommended for more complex family or financial circumstances.
The original will should be safely stored and regularly updated as circumstances change.
