News24: How do I know if I am the beneficiary in a will?

On News24, the personal finance journalist, Maya Fisher-French, addresses a reader question in regard to how she would know if she had been made a beneficiary in a will.

Louis van Vuren, FISA CEO, explains that once a will has been received by the Master of the High Court and entered into the register under Section 8 of the Administration of Estates Act, it is in the public domain. It is also possible that the reader’s father died intestate, in which case the laws of intestate succession will apply. Immediate family are regarded as interested parties and can contact the Master to be included in consultations to appoint an executor.
