Moonstone: Jooste’s death raises questions about the fate of seized assets

Moonstone asked FISA CEO Louis van Vuren for comment for an article around the estate late of Markus Jooste, former CEO of Steinhoff, who took his life on 21 March.

Background

A High Court order was issued in October 2022 against Jooste, the family’s trust Silver Oak Trust, and Lanzerac Estate Investments, ordering the attachment of assets by the SA Reserve Bank (SARB). The attachment order was aimed at safeguarding assets until the SARB completed its investigation into certain of Jooste’s business dealings. Until such time, Jooste and the apparent owners of the assets were permitted to possess and utilise them, but were prohibited from dispersing, relocating, or damaging any of the assets or evidence.

But, with Jooste having passed away before the conclusion of the SARB investigation or, for that matter, having faced official criminal charges, what happens to these seized assets?
